Bernice Lucile Kuck, 87, of Topeka, Kansas, formerly of Lawrence, Overbrook and Auburn, KS, passed away December 23, 2014 at Rolling Hills Retirement Community. She was born May 7, 1927, in Stover, Missouri, to Herman G. Kuck and Lydia J. (Eding) Kuck. As a young girl, Bernice and her family lived in various small towns in Missouri. While attending high school in Concordia, MO, she worked part time for a chicken hatchery. Bernice and her parents then moved to Sweet Springs, MO and, as a high school junior, began working for the shoe factory in town and continued to work there for 15 years. She graduated from the Sweet Springs High School. Throughout Bernice's working years, she held a variety of jobs, including the garment factories in Concordia and Higginsville, MO, and the Montgomery Ward Catalog Store in Kansas City. In 1959 she moved to Lawrence, KS to begin a 10-year career at the Hallmark Cards plant which had just opened. She then attended the Clark School of Business in Topeka and acquired a position at Trinity Universal Insurance Co. where she worked for 5 years. Bernice also held part-time positions at Katz Drug Co. and P.N. Hirsch Co. The next chapter in her life included the Falley's Market in Topeka where she worked for approximately 27 years and several more years at the Auburn Apple Market after moving to Auburn in 2000. Bernice grew up as a member of the Lutheran Church (MO Synod) and became a member of the Auburn Presbyterian Church after moving to Auburn. Bernice attended the Auburn Meal Site for several years, and made many friends there and at her apartment complex. Bernice loved cats, especially Julia, her faithful feline companion of 15 years. She is survived by two nieces, Lucile (Bob) Shoemaker of Topeka, Marie (Keith) Pearce of Berryton; two great-nieces, Lori (Eric) McReynolds and Karen Pearce (Jerome Donnelly), two great-nephews, Mark (Wanda) Shoemaker and Kevin (Kristina) Pearce, three great-great-nieces, Ashley Lynn, Mallory McReynolds, Ayden Donnelly and three great-great nephews, Isaac Shoemaker, Luke Shoemaker and Connor McReynolds. Bernice is preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Dorothy Niebrugge. Bernice was a very caring person and enjoyed family gatherings and visiting with friends.
