Charlene New Obituary

Charlene Jane New was born September 24, 1928 in Richmond, Kansas to Charles Elias New and Carrie (Thompson) New. Charlene had two sisters, Delma (Mavity) New and Jean (Bari) New. Her parents and sisters preceded her in death. Charlene died Thursday, June 11th, 2015. When Charlene was eight she moved with her family to Piper City, Illinois, and later to East Chicago,Indiana where she resided for many years. She graduated during war years and never married because "all the good men" were at war. She entered the work force and had several different jobs but her career in Human Resources was with General American Transportation for 30 years. Charlene's life was defined by her very independent and caring nature. She traveled to Europe and various other countries and islands with her friends and family. She was considered the "fun" aunt by her nieces and nephews. She loved to play games and was especially fond of the penny slots at the casino. Her expertise at all games was legend and rarely did she lose. Her family could always count on her joining in the fun, whether it be trips or family get togethers. After retiring she moved to Ottawa, Kansas where she spent time with her sister Delma and brother-in-law Charles. They took many trips to various places in the United States, she sitting in the back seat doing crossword puzzles. The tales from these trips were epic. Charlene will always be remembered for her independent nature. She never quit being involved. For many years she was a volunteer at Lincoln Elementary School, helping struggling readers. Charlene received the Reading Volunteer of Year from the Kansas Reading Association in 2001. She never became old. She frequently told her friends and family to not become old.She left this life when it became apparent she might have to revise her thinking. She was a very tough but salty sweet lady who was known as Aunt Charlene by the ones who loved her best. Various family members will miss her sorely. The Howard family, the Mavity family, the Bari family, the Kirkpatrick family, the Gilbert family - nephews, nieces, cousins and others are left behind with wonderful memories. Charlene was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was a Christian of great caliber, treating everyone with respect and humor. She will be greatly missed by all her family and friends. Her touch on our lives left a positive impact that can never be erased. Rest peacefully Charlene. We are all better for knowing and loving you. A memorial service for Charlene will be at the First United Methodist Church, Tuesday, June 30th at 4:00p.m. Friends and family are invited to attend and share memories.
