He was active in band all through Junior High and High School where he was also a member of Cytones. Hal also was a member of the city band and also taught guitar at Butler's Music. He was active in Boy Scout Troop 77 and attended Philmont Scout Ranch and was an Eagle Scout. Hal attended Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas and majored in Art and Theater graduating in 1980. During his college years, Hal was a member of the BakerpLaymen where he did the lighting and sound for their many performances. This led to a teaching position at the University of Wisconsin - Madison where he also worked with the fine arts press, Tandem Press. Hal returned to Ottawa in 1997 and began working at the Ottawa Public Library shortly afterward. He was the Systems Librarian there until his retirement in 2010. While in Ottawa, Hal became involved with Kiwanis and served three terms as President. He worked with Kiwanis to support many organizations in Ottawa and Franklin County. He also was involved with his childhood church, First Baptist and served briefly on the church council. He loved nature and took great pleasure in feeding and identifying all the birds and animals at his home. Hal was known for his sincere patience and his ability to work with a wide variety of personalities in everything he did. He had a wry and ironic sense of humor and loved learning. Hal also loved to teach. Described as a mentor by many of his friends, Hal loved to help others succeed and took great joy in the process. An accomplished musician, Hal played the guitar, bass, piano, organ, banjo and mandolin.
