Larry Beckett Obituary

Larry Gene Beckett, 68 of Scranton, KS passed away Sunday, August 23, 2015 at Stormont Vail Hospital, Topeka, KS. Larry was a born March 9, 1947 in San Antonio, TX the son of Thomas Robert Beckett and Alice Marie (Turner) Beckett. He spent most of his childhood in Topeka, KS. Following in his father's footsteps, Larry enlisted in the Army National Guard in 1964 at the age of 16. After graduation from Topeka High in 1965 Larry was hired as a full time technician for the Guard in the field of Avionics. Larry possessed a natural talent for electronics and quickly became known as the guy who could fix anything with nothing. Larry was called to active duty during the Viet Nam war and served at Ft. Carson, Colorado where he met his wife. Larry was united in marriage to Karen Sue Blackwell on August 29, 1969 in Colorado Springs, CO. They shared forty-six years of marriage. After his retirement from civil service Larry worked as a Teacher/Aide in the Copy Center at Washburn Rural High School for 19 years. In this job Larry had found another natural fit with the students and copy machines to keep running. Larry always had snacks on hand for hungry kids and he spent many a weekend filming the school's wrestling team. Larry has always enjoyed working with young people and thru the years he worked with several church youth groups as the biggest kid at camp. Larry and Karen moved from Topeka to Scranton in 2004 due to their joint love of camping and fishing. In recent years Larry volunteered sound equipment and dj services to various church and community functions. Larry is survived by his wife, Karen of the home; a sister, Debi Hagan of Salem, Oregon and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Mr. Beckett was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, who died in infancy; and a son, Aaron Thomas Beckett in 1992.
