Marshall Werth Obituary

Marshall Layton Werth, age 83, of Ottawa, KS, died May 24, 2014, at Olathe Medical Center. He was born June 26, 1930, in Aberdeen, South Dakota to Marshall Leroy and Margarita (Townsend) Werth. Marshall graduated from Wyandotte High School and would further his education at junior college. Marshall then began his career in the Navy in 1950. During his time serving our country, Marshall received six awards including the U.S. Navy's Good Conduct Medal. He also graduated from the Naval School of Justice. After his retirement from the U.S. Navy, Marshall would begin a career in public service. He worked as a Dispatcher for the Franklin County Sheriff's Department soon after moving to Ottawa from Evansville, IN in 1977 and had a few varied jobs throughout the years while thoroughly enjoying his Navy retirement. He volunteered at Ransom Memorial Hospital at the front desk and gift shop for several of the last 18 years. Marshall was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Ottawa, KS and was also a member of Ottawa Lodge #18, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons. Marshall was renowned for his telling of "goofy, old" jokes and he enjoyed talking politics to anyone that would lend an ear; many times despite the loving, amused embarrassment of his daughter and wife. Marshall was united in marriage to Charlotte Ann Wright in 1955 in Paola, KS. She preceded him in death on September 21, 2002. Marshall was remarried to Phyllis (Petersen) Carey on February 21, 2004 at Faith Lutheran Church, she survives of the home. Survivors also include a daughter, Allison Ann Werth, Ottawa, KS; two sisters, Jane Joslyn, Olathe, KS and Ann Bernard, Indianapolis, Indiana; three step-sons; and numerous grandchildren. Mr. Werth was preceded in death by his first wife, Charlotte; and a brother, Dick Werth. Family will receive friends on Thursday, May 29, 2014 from 6-8 p.m. at Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home, Ottawa, KS.
