Mary Geneva Settles

Mary Geneva Settles, age 100, of Overbrook, Kansas, passed away on October 15, 2015, at Brookside Retirement Community Overbrook, KS. She was born June 5, 1915, in Olmitz, KS, to George Harper and Elizabeth Katherine (Hickey) Harper. She grew up in rural Lane County, Kansas graduating from Healy High School, Healy, Kansas with the class of 1933. Mary lived in Healy, Kansas through the Dust Storms of the 1930's working at the local hardware store in Healy. On April 17, 1941 Mary was united in marriage to Alwyn Cecil "Walt" Settles in Sanford, Florida, where Walt was stationed in the US Army Air Corps. During Walt's time in the military they lived in a number of places, including Delaware, Pennsylvania, Garden City, KS, Tacoma, WA, Anchorage, Alaska, and then final moving to Overbrook in 1957. Mary worked at O'Bryhims Thriftway in Overbrook for thirteen years. Mary was also a member of the United Methodist Church in Overbrook. Mary and Walt shared over sixty years of loving marriage until he preceded her in death on April 1, 2002. She is also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Jim Harper, George Harper, Jr., and four sisters, Edna Dutoit, Faye Pinkston, Gladys Glancy, and Hazel Cooling. Mary is survived by a son Alwyn Cecil Settles, Jr. of DeKalb, Illinois; a daughter, LaNno Settles of Seward, Alaska; and a granddaughter Cecilia Settles of Chicago, Illinois. Funeral Services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, October 23, 2015 at Overbrook United Methodist Church. Family will meet with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, October 22, 2015 at the Greenwood-Roberts Funeral Home, Overbrook. Interment will be 9 a.m., Saturday October 24, 2015 at Healy Cemetery, Healy, Kansas.
