Mary E. Snell of Overbrook, KS passed away on Feb. 10, 2015, at the age of 85. Mary was born Feb. 22, 1929 at Carbondale, KS. She was the daughter of Ray and Lois (Martindale) Shepard. Mary and her husband Orlando owned Snell Drive In and Café at Carbondale for 20 years. She cooked for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Topeka, KS and also for the Lutheran School in Topeka for a few years. She also worked at Whelan Lumber Co. before moving on to Sutherland Lumber where she was head of the electrical department until she retired. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Overbrook. She belonged to the Better Business Women of Topeka, was chairman of the Democrats of Osage County for several years, and a member of the Kansas Quarter Horse circuit where she was their secretary-treasurer. She and her husband were head of the Overbrook Fair Horse Show for many years until they retired. Mary was married July 27, 1944 to Orlando B. Snell. He died Sept. 20th, 1980. She was also preceded in death by her parents, husband and six siblings. Survivors include a daughter, Orlana Hurner and her husband Bill of Carbondale. A son, Orlando Lee Snell and his wife Mary of Overbrook; a sister, Margaret Piper of Carbondale and a brother, George Shepard and his wife Charlene of Valley Falls. She is also survived by four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. There will be a private graveside service at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Shawnee County.
