Mildred Whitney Obituary

Mildred Knoop Whitney, 87, of Baldwin City, KS, passed away Wednesday, July 19, 2017 at Brandon Woods of Alvamar in the Arbor Unit, Lawrence, KS. She was born April 4, 1930 in rural Miami County, KS the daughter of Frank Melvin Knoop and Ella Mae Attebery. She grew up Miami County attending Popular Ridge grade School and Paola High School for one year. She eventually graduated from Wellsville High School with the class of 1948. She then attended Ursilene Academy in Paola and Baker University in Baldwin City in order to receive her teaching certificate. Mildred also lived in Kansas City for a short time after her marriage as well as Paola before moving to Baldwin City in 1952 and then in 1953 moving to their home at 603 Indiana, where they lived the rest of their lives.    Mildred was a homemaker and housewife who spent many hours actively involved with raising her family. Mildred was a member of the Wellsville Baptist Church, Wellsville. She was active in the American Baptist Women, World Day of Prayer, and many other activities. One of her favorite things to do was singing hymns. She was a founding member of the Baldwin Baptist Chapel where she was a Sunday school and church piano player. In the 1960's she was President of the Baldwin City Grade School P.T.A. Many birthday and wedding cakes were made by Mildred during her lifetime for many in the community. She enjoyed canning and freezing all sorts of vegetables from her garden. She was always keeping up with her nieces and nephews, she was always concerned about them. Her love for her family was evident to everyone who knew her. She always helped with the grandkids and was always there for her daughters. On January 25, 1950, Mildred was united in marriage to Billy Allen Whitney at Bethel Baptist Church, Paola.   They shared over forty-eight years of loving marriage together until Billy passed away in 1998. She was also preceded in death by her parents and four siblings. Mildred is survived by four daughters; Martha Wright and her husband, Jim, Baldwin City, Naomi Burgess and her husband, Steve, Baldwin City, Sarah Pantano and her husband, Mike, Abilene, KS, Ruth Peine and her husband Earl, Garnett; five grandchildren, Timothy DeMott, Susie Ussery, Bryon Wright, Whitney Peine, Andrew Peine; and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, July 24, 2017, at Wellsville Baptist Church, Wellsville, KS. The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Sunday, July 23, 2017 at the Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home, Baldwin City, KS.   Memorial contributions may be made to Wellsville Baptist Church sent c/o Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home, P.O.
