Phyllis Jean Carey, 87, of Princeton, KS, passed away Thursday, September 21, 2017 at Olathe Medical Center, Olathe, KS. She was born September 11, 1930 in Council Bluffs, IA, the daughter of Louis William Petersen and Edna Marie (Larson) Petersen. Phyllis grew up in rural Iowa, primarily in the IA area. She moved to the Princeton area in 1951 living there ever since. Phyllis had to stop school at the age of 13 after her mother died of tuberculosis in order to help out at the family home. She returned to school and attained her G.E.D. after her children had grown. She then attended and graduated from the Kansas City Business College in 1973 with a Registered Medical Assistant degree followed by a Certified Medical Assistant-Clinical degree. Phyllis worked as an RMA/CMA at many local medical institutions primarily at Richmond Care Center, Richmond, KS, retiring in 1996. Phyllis served for several terms on the Medical Assistants National Board first as secretary then as treasurer. Phyllis was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church, Ottawa. She loved to garden in her spare time and often had a large garden on the farm. Phyllis was an independent lady who knew how to get things done. On December 31, 1952 Phyllis was united in marriage with Alton Frederick Carey at Keswick, IA. He preceded her in death in 2002. Phyllis was united in marriage to Marshall Werth on February 21, 2004. He preceded her in death in 2014. Phyllis was also preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Alvin and Don Petersen, and one child, Sonya Rauch. She is survived by her brother Louie Petersen of Memphis, MO; three sons; Arnold Rauch of Clever, MO, Dale Carey of Chanute, KS, Michael Carey and wife, Debra, of Princeton, KS; eight grandchildren; John Rauch, Brian Rauch, Keith Rauch, Krissy Phillips, Allen Carey, Chris Hildebrandt, Ashley Hird, and Malissa Desormeaux; eleven great grandchildren, Danica Rauch, Brenden Rauch, Eric Rauch, Kyrah Phillips, Emily Alexander, Mikala Alexander, Lucas Hildebrandt, Emma Hird, Dillon Carey, Kirsten Carey, and Bennett Desormeaux; and one great-great grandchild, Jaxon Carey. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, September 28, 2017, Faith Lutheran Church, Ottawa, Kansas. Burial will follow at Princeton Cemetery, Princeton, KS.
