Agnes Shrum Obituary

Agnes Lorabel "Lora" Shrum departed from this life into the loving arms of Jesus on December 26, 2019. She was 90 years, six months, and three days of age. Lora was born in Joplin, Missouri on June 23, 1929 to James and Willa Bryant. She attended school in Joplin and graduated from Joplin High School in 1946. She gave her heart to the Lord at an early age and was active as a singer and piano player in church and revival meetings. At one such revival meeting in October 1951 in Turon, Kansas, Lora was assisting a minister friend, and on this occasion a young man named Bob Shrum was in attendance. Bob later recounted that the Lord impressed on him that Lora might be his wife someday, but he thought she was a stuckup city girl who wouldn't be interested in him. Despite these early misgivings, on June 1, 1952, Lora and Bob were united in marriage in Joplin. Lora was a devoted companion to Bob until his death in 2004. Early in their marriage Lora and Bob were farmers in Kansas and Missouri, and Lora held jobs as a telephone operator and grocery store clerk. Several years later the couple relocated to Ottawa, Kansas, and Bob partnered with Wallace Rule to form Rule & Shrum Construction Company. Lora served as bookkeeper and receptionist for the company until Bob and Lora retired. Lora was a longtime member of First Assembly of God Church in Ottawa, where she was active as a singer, piano player, and teacher. She always exhibited a deep love for Jesus and was dedicated to helping others know Him in a personal way. She is survived by one daughter and two sons: Teresa Kay Anderson resides with her husband Paul in Farmington Hills, Michigan; Kenneth Earl Shrum resides with his wife Michelle in Odenton, Maryland; and Jonathan Bryan Shrum resides with his wife Shelley in Davis, Illinois. She is also survived by two grandsons, Matthew and Jacob Shrum (sons of Jonathan and Shelley). Lora is preceded in death by her parents James and Willa Bryant, her husband Bob Shrum, and three brothers, Howard, Hubert, and Willard Bryant. She will be remembered for her graciousness, her musical spirit, her compassion for others, and her abiding devotion to her God, her family, and her church. The family will receive friends 2 p.m. Saturday, January 11, 2020 at the Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home, 325 S. Hickory, Ottawa, KS 66067.
