Charles Howard Schraeder passed away April 13, 2019 at Rock Creek Nursing Home, Ottawa, Kansas. He was born January 17, 1934 in Canton, KS, the son of A.C. and Mary G. (Wackerman) Schraeder. While growing up, Charles was active in football and track. He graduated from Nickerson High School with the class of 1952. He continued his education at Hutchinson Community College. Charles served his country in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956, which included a tour in Germany. After his honorable discharge, Charles returned to Kansas and entered Emporia State Teacher College in January of 1957. While studying at William Allen White Library, he met his future wife, Darlene Baker. Charles taught American History for four years in Manhattan, KS and twenty five years at Shawnee Mission West High School in Shawnee, KS. He also owned and operated a painting company. The family moved several times, finally settling in Ottawa, KS in 2008. Charles and Darlene were united in marriage on March 30, 1958 in the Christian Church of Emporia, Kansas. They shared over 61 years of loving marriage. She survives of the home. He is also survived by five children, Kenneth, Ft. Wayne, IN, Jeff, Lawrence, KS, Steve, Lori, and Angela, all of Ottawa, KS; six grandsons; eight great granddaughters; seven great grandsons; and one sister, Janice Nuest and her husband, Ed, Sterling, KS. Charles is preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Wayne Schraeder; and two sisters, Mabel Nadine Schraeder and Audene Towse. Charles loved the outdoors. Weekends were filled with trips to nearby lakes, where he taught all the kids how to waterski. He was renowned for his campfires which never had too many logs. He also enjoyed fishing at local farm ponds. The family will greet friends on Friday, April 19, 2019 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home, 325 S. Hickory St., Ottawa, Kansas. Celebration of Life services will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 20, 2019 at Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home. Inurnment will be at Leavenworth National Cemetery.
