Floyd Greenwood Obituary

Floyd L. Greenwood, age 88, of Overbrook, KS, passed away Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at Brookside Manor, Overbrook. He was born January 10, 1930 at the Greenwood family farm three miles north of Carlton, KS, the son of William Greenwood and Lida Viola (Beetch) Greenwood. Floyd attended Rich Valley grade school in his youth, walking the ¾-mile walk every day from his childhood home. He then attended Abilene High School, Abilene, KS, graduating with the class of 1947. He attended Kansas University in 1947 and after his military service, he attended Kansas Wesleyan University. In January of 1963, Floyd enrolled in the Dallas Institute - Gupton Jones College of Mortuary Science, where he graduated in February of 1964 as Salutatorian of the class and was a member of Pi Sigma Eta, an honorary mortuary fraternity. During Floyd's time at KU, he was a member of the Navy R.O.T.C. where he was the high scorer on the rifle range in the Ninth Naval District. In July of 1951, he entered the United States Army where he quickly became an expert rifleman while training at Fort Riley, KS. He then was sent to Ft. Lawton, WA while awaiting his overseas shipment, which came in January of 1952 to the Army Clerk Typist School in Eta Jima, Japan. In February of 1952, he was assigned to G.H.Q., 8th Army headquarters, Tokyo, Japan as a typist for radio and cable in the message center. In the spring and summer of 1952, he was sent to detached service to Peace Camp at Munsan Ni, Korea, north of Seoul, to type and work during the peace talks from Pan-Mun-Jom, Korea. He also pitched two no-hit softball games while there. He then became the head typist for the Eighth Army Engineers Headquarters at Paqeui, Korea and was stationed there until he was shipped back to the states and discharged from his service to our country as a Corporal. Floyd farmed with his father before re-entering college in 1961. After graduation from mortuary school, he was a Funeral Director and Embalmer from 1964 to 1965 for Scott-Brantley Funeral Home in Norton, KS. He then worked for Jones Funeral Home in Waverly, KS until 1971. In 1971, Floyd and his family moved to Overbrook, KS where he operated his funeral home, Greenwood-Roberts Funeral Home, until his retirement at the age of 80 in 2010. During those years, he also assisted as a funeral director in Baldwin City and Ottawa for Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home. He also sold, set, and lettered cemetery monuments for many years. Floyd was a member of Overbrook Rotary Club and Kansas Funeral Directors Association. He served the Overbrook community on the Overbrook City Council for two terms, as well as forty years on the Overbrook Cemetery Board. Floyd was a past Commander of the Waverly American Legion Post #119 and a fifty-two year member of American Legion Post #239 of Overbrook. He was an honorary lifetime member of Jayhawk Model Masters Radio Control Flying Club of Lawrence. Floyd was a hardworking, dependable, and honest man. He was a skilled craftsman with a pleasant nature and a wonderful sense of humor. He was a master storyteller and always had a good joke to share. He took great pride in his professional work and serving the communities of Overbrook, Baldwin City, and Ottawa. On October 11, 1954, Floyd was united in marriage to Bonita Joan Gribben in Marienthal, KS. Bonnie and Floyd celebrated their sixty-third year of marriage this past October. Floyd is survived by his wife, Bonita Greenwood, Overbrook; two daughters, Janet Arnold and her husband, Rocky, Topeka, KS, Jo Ann Westra and her husband, Geoffrey, Prairie Village, KS; brother Bob Greenwood and his wife, Judi, Carlton, KS; three granddaughters, Jessica Sisco Peterson and her husband, Stephen, San Francisco, CA, Evan Arnold, Kansas City, MO, Jenna Westra, Vail, CO; and a great-grandson Conrad. He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, William L. Greenwood; and son, Steven Greenwood. Memorial funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, April 9, 2018 at Overbrook United Methodist Church, Overbrook. Family will greet friends for a visitation from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Sunday April 8, 2018 at Greenwood-Roberts Funeral Home, Overbrook.
