Gary Lee Warthen, age 63, of Overbrook, Kansas, died April 14, 2012, at his residence. He was born on February 14, 1949 in Topeka, Kansas, the son of Robert M. Warthen and Henrietta (Stretter) Warthen. He graduated from Shawnee Heights High School with the class of 1966. He then served his country in the United States Army from 1967 to 1969 serving in the Vietnam War. Gary has lived the last 20 years of his life in Overbrook, moving there from Lawrence. He was a machinist/welder for Westar Energy at the Lawrence power plant for 26 years retiring in 2002. He was a member of the American Legion of Overbrook and Local #304 Electrical Workers Union of Topeka. Gary is survived by daughter, Denisha Hoy of Topeka; son, Chris Warthen and his wife, Shannon, of Overbrook; his father Robert M. Warthen of Tecumseh; two brothers, Roberts Warthen, Jr. of Topeka, Michael Warthen and his wife, Cheryl, of Scranton, three grandchildren, Cara Jane Simonsen, Jonathon Hoy, Colton Warthen; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his mother, Henrietta Warthen. Memorial funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m., Thursday, April 19, 2012, at Overbrook Bible Church.
