Lloyd Switzer Obituary

Lloyd Lyle Switzer of Ottawa, Kansas went to be with his Heavenly Father on November 26, 2019, at the age of 87. He was born the second of identical twin boys on September 19, 1932 to Neil and Elizabeth (Jacobitz) Switzer in his Grandpa and Grandma Switzer's house in Oakley, Kansas. Lloyd spent most of his childhood in Oakley and was active in band, sports and many school activities and he made many lifelong friends during his childhood. Lloyd graduated from Oakley High School in 1950 and attended Fort Hays State University where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma Kappa fraternity. During the Korean War, Lloyd enlisted in the United States Air Force and served stateside for four years. It was during his service that he went on a blind date where he would meet the love of his life. He met Marlene Fredrickson, a nursing student at Trinity Lutheran Hospital in Kansas City. They were engaged after a six month courtship and married the following year on June 23, 1957 and they shared over 62 years together. After his military service, Lloyd returned to Fort Hays State University and graduated in 1958 with a Bachelor's Degree in business. After graduation Lloyd got a job with Firestone Tire and they moved to Salina, Kansas where they made their first home and started a family and were blessed with five children. During the early years they moved to Hutchinson, Salina and Wichita for his job and they finally settled in Ottawa in 1967 and made Ottawa their life long home. Lloyd worked for Firestone for 35 years and managed the Ottawa store for 25 years. Lloyd worked long hours in the store but always had time for his family. He coached sports, took family camping trips, fished and golfed. After retirement he went to work at the Ottawa Airport and with the help of Chuck and Tony LeMaster he was able to achieve a life-long dream of earning his private pilot's license. He continued to work part time at the airport until 2018. He liked to stay busy and always had a smile on his face. He never met a stranger and was always willing to lend a hand to whoever needed it. He took great care of his customers during his time at Firestone and took even greater care of his family. He had an especially soft spot for his grandchildren and was always a faithful attendee at their school events and also planned summer outings with them, camping or exploring the sights in the area. Lloyd was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church. He was a life member of the Warren Black American Legion Post 60 and faithfully volunteered for many duties through the years to honor veterans and support local youth. He was also a member of the Endowment Foundation of Fort Hays State University for sixteen years retiring in 2007. Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents, Neil Switzer and Elizabeth Switzer, step-mother Edis Schauvliege; twin brother Floyd Switzer; and brothers, Richard Switzer, Ron Switzer and brother-in-law, Ronald Fredrickson.
