Marian C. Swain

Marian Charlaine (Gates) Swain, 80, of Baldwin City, Kansas passed away July 26, 2019 at her home. She was born January 8, 1939 in Hays, KS the daughter of Charles G. Gates and Mary E. (Barkley) Gates. Marian grew up in Chanute, Kansas and graduated from Topeka High School in 1957 after which she attended Washburn University as a member of the Alpha Phi sorority. She received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1973, and later an associate's degree in nursing from Mary Grimes School of Nursing. Marian worked in numerous business capacities and in real estate for many years, and most recently as a Registered Nurse at Ransom Memorial Hospital. On September 26, 1962, Marian was united in marriage to Thomas Galen Swain of Topeka in Furth, Germany. They shared forty-five years of marriage together until Thomas's death in 2007. Marian is survived by three children, Kevin Swain, Kansas City, MO; Kirk Swain, Eudora, KS; Marne Swain, Baldwin City, KS; and a sister, Marilyn Hite, of Chandler, Arizona. She was a beloved "Grammy" to four grandchildren: Bethany Swain, Missouri; Dylan Swain, Lawrence, KS; Samantha Green, Merriam, KS; Macy Green, Baldwin City, KS. She was also a favored aunt to several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Thomas G. Swain; brother, Norman B. Gates; sister, Mary Margaret Huckstep; and nieces Gwendolyn (Gates) Sims and Janet Huckstep. Marian has been cremated. The family will receive friends 10 am Saturday, August 17, 2019 at the Fellowship Bible Church, 926 Ames St. Baldwin City, KS 66006. A memorial service will follow at 11 am Saturday, August 17, 2019 at the Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the National Humane Society or any local animal shelter.
