WYNONA JAUNITA HAYWARD, age 99, passed away peacefully at Rock Creek of Ottawa on March 6, 2019. Visitation will be Tuesday, March 12, 2019 from 1 - 2:30 pm and Funeral Service will be held at 2:30 pm at Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home at 325 South Hickory Street in Ottawa, KS to celebrate the life of Wynona Jaunita Hayward of Ottawa, KS. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery under the direction of Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home. Wynona was born September 16, 1919 to the union of Laura Belle and Louis Laughlin at Stroud, OK. Wynona was an Oklahoma native and moved from Cushing, OK to Manhattan, KS in 1936. There she met and was united in marriage to Orville Hayward on September 18, 1938 at First Methodist Church. In Manhattan she worked at A.L. Duckwall Five and Dime Store Company, both downtown and Aggieville for three years and was Assistant Manager of Kings Candy and Gift Shop for four years. In 1943 her husband was inducted in the U.S. Army at Fort Leavenworth where Wynona joined him and worked at JCPenney. Orville was transferred to Concordia, KS to work at the Prisoner of War Camp, and she worked at Montgomery Ward until 1946. After her husband was discharged, they moved to Ottawa where he was a long-time Manager of the A&P Store. Wynona was a cashier at Cusick Cafe and later operated her own cafe (City Cafe) for four years. She was also Bookkeeper and Payroll Manager for Miller Construction for thirteen years, retiring in 1963. Wynona was preceded in death by her husband, Orville Hayward, after 60 years of marriage, her mother, father, one brother, four sisters, and two nieces. Living relatives are nieces Leta McLemore, Plano, TX, (previously of Monroe, LA) and Elaine Walker, Rawlins, WY; nephews Dr. Marvin Peyton and wife Sandra, Oklahoma City, OK, Phillip Hamilton and wife Rochelle, Marquette, KS, Dr. Porter Hamilton and wife Danell, Newton, IA; great nieces Sharon Peery, Cushing, OK, Chrystal Probasco-Rush and husband Chris, Skiatook, OK, Carole McLemore, Madison, AL, Sheila McCarty and husband Mike, Plano, TX, Lisa McCoy, Leawood, KS, Stephanie Simpkins and husband Scott, Overland Park, KS, Laura Peyton, Richardson, TX, Barbara Koontz and husband Gary, Rawlins, WY, Connie Skates and husband, Kevin, Thermopolis, WY, Lori Holeman and husband Patrick, Temecula, CA, Kristin and Rebecca Porter, Newton, IA; great nephews Brent McLemore and wife Sondra, Annapolis, MD, Dr. Lane Peyton and wife Brooke, Oklahoma City, OK, Tyler Peyton, Oklahoma City, OK, Randy Porter, Newton, IA, Jack Walker and wife Camilla, South Weber, UT. She was also loved by a host of great, great, great nieces and nephews who continued to receive her interest and love. Wynona was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, which held a special place in her heart, and her family and friends were very important to her. She was a homemaker and loved to work in her yard and flowers. For over 50 years, she was a member of Eagles Auxillary and also an active member of a Cancer Support Group. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends who were blessed by knowing her.
