Alfred “Dean” Base, 78, of Baldwin City, KS passed away Tuesday, June 30, 2026 at Advent Health Shawnee Mission, Kansas. He was born November 15, 1947 in Salina, Kansas the son of Alfred James Base and Dorothy Cecilia (Hanson) Base. Dean graduated with the Class of 1966 at Lawrence High School, Lawrence, Kansas.
He was united in marriage to Barbara Curtiss on April 25, 1966 in Lawrence, Kansas. They shared over sixty years of marriage.
Dean began working at the Sunflower Ammunition Plant at DeSoto, KS; repaired grain elevators before working for Kansas Power and Light as a Painter. Dean framed houses in the surrounding area for thirty-seven years as the owner of 4-B Framers Inc. In 2008 he began driving a dump truck for R.D. Johnson and then Hamm’s Construction Company. Dean later continued driving trucks for Sunflower Paving and Wilson Transport in Eudora.
Dean will be remembered for his strong work ethic since the Third Grade, supporting his family in every endeavor, coaching his kids’ ball teams, and later attending all his grandchildren’s events. Dean always created a fun environment for his kids and grandkids making sure they always had a dirtbike, four-wheeler, or horse to ride. Dean and Barb created a long-lasting tradition of trips to Chadwick, MO for over 45 years bringing all their family and friends along the way. He was a social man who was always making phone calls to his grandkids and friends. Dean’s family was his Pride and Joy!
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Dorothy Base.
Surviving family includes his wife, Barbara of the home; a daughter, Kimberly Jo Base of Topeka, KS; three sons, Kevin James Base and wife, Belinda of Baldwin City, KS; Kent Jarrod Base and wife, Dianne of Ottawa, KS and Kraig Justin Base of Baldwin City, KS; son-in-law, Chad Allan Hoobler of Baldwin City, KS; a half-brother, Richard Nicholau of Salina, KS; seven grandchildren, Evan and Brooke Hoobler, Madison, Morgan, Triston, Kaitlin and Easton Base; and four great-grandchildren, Ryder, Brantley, Trace and Rowen Hoobler.
Cremation is planned and a private family Celebration of Life will be held at the family farm. Condolences may be sent to the family through www.lamb-roberts.com.
