Alvin Crawford Obituary

Alvin E. Crawford, 82, of Ottawa passed away April 14, 2016 at Ottawa Retirement Village. He was born August1, 1933 in Olivet, Kansas the son of Raymond Crawford and Florence (Conklin) Crawford. He was a lifelong Franklin County resident. Alvin attended school in a one room school house and graduated his 9 grade year. He wore many hats through his life, he was a salesman for the Singer Sewing Machine Comp, and quite the auto trader always wheeling and dealing for cars in his younger days. He later bought the Sinclair filling Station , and operated the station for several years, He did carpentry work and home construction until he took the position with USD 290 becoming the Head of Maintenance in which he retired from in 1991. Alvin never new a stranger and was often accused being able to talk to a fence post if it would nod its head. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it. Alvin was a jack of all trades and a master of MANY! On June 7th 1953 Alvin was united in marriage with his one and only love and true sole mate Lucille Davis. She survives of the home. After retirement he and Lucy starting wintering in Texas eventually staying full time, until 2011 when they decided to come back home to be closer to his kids and grandchildren whom he adored. Alvin was a member of the First Christian Church. He served with the Civil Defense during the 51 Flood in Ottawa, and was a sponsor for Junior Wrangler for several years. He and Lucy were also members of the Night Crawlers camping club. He is also survived by three children; Rick Crawford and his wife, Sherry, Ottawa, Reid Crawford, Richmond, KS, Robin Horne and her husband, Mike, Ottawa; a daughter-in-law Trela Crawford, Ottawa; sister, Eula Mae Wadkins, Ottawa; seven grandchildren, Holly Showalter, Jason Crawford, John Crawford, Josh Crawford, Jenna Rubick, Trey Horne, Logan Horne; sixteen great grandchildren with one on the way; and many nieces and nephews. Alvin was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Randy Crawford; brother Marvin Crawford, and a sister, Thelma Brenner. Alvin's sweet and ornery spirit will be missed dearly by all those who knew him. Memorial funeral services will be April 22nd at 1:00 pm at Forest Park shelter house #2.
