Carl Butell Obituary

Carl Butell, 81, of Baldwin City, KS passed away surrounded by the love and care of his family on April 28, 2022 at the Kansas City Hospice House, Kansas City, MO.  He was born January 8, 1941 in Olathe, KS the son of Carl B. Butell and Leona (Chastain) Butell.

Carl was a lifetime Baldwin City resident and took pride in his rich Prairie City family history dating back to the 1800s. He graduated from Baldwin High School with the Class of 1959 and continued his education at the University of Kansas graduating in 1964 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics. During his college years, Carl was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity at KU where he made several lifelong friends and met his cherished travel companion, Alan George.

After college graduation, Carl returned to Baldwin and began work as a teller at the Baldwin State Bank. He continued working in the bank for his entire professional career serving as President from 1986 until his retirement in 2008.  Post-retirement, he continued his leadership serving as Chairman of the Bank Board until his death.

On June 17, 1967, Carl was united in marriage to Susan Swan at the First United Methodist Church in Baldwin City, KS.  They shared fifty-four years of love, laughter, and 3 children.

Carl was a proud supporter of his community, serving in leadership roles on the Baldwin City Library Board, First United Methodist Church, Past President of the USD 348 school board, past member of the Baldwin City Jaycees, and he was a passionate and active supporter for Boy Scout Troop 65.  He was a Rotary Past President and Harris Fellow recipient.

Carl always maintained a calm demeanor and dry sense of humor even through his difficulties.  He was a loyal KU fan who never gave up on the football team and joyfully attended both KU Orange Bowl appearances.  He loved to travel in his later years and was actively involved in the lives of his grandchildren, attending school programs, supporting youth athletics, taking summer “Grandparents Trips” and driving with his dog Finn in his green Chevy S10.  He spent many happy hours over his lifetime keeping his shoes polished and his knives sharpened.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Carl B. and Leona Butell and a sister, Marti. He is survived by his wife, Susan Butell, Baldwin City, KS; three children, Katy Bach and her husband, Jim, Manhattan, KS, Bryan Butell, Baldwin City, KS, Bonnie Butell-Huntoon and her husband, Ivan, Lenexa, KS; a sister, Joan Hambrick, Oklahoma City, OK; and five grandchildren, Tory Bach, Sheridan Bach, Ava Huntoon, Gabrielle Huntoon, and Mary Huntoon.
