Carole Ann Peters, 82, of Lawrence, KS died Saturday, June 10, 2023 at Morningstar Care Homes in Baldwin City, Kansas.
She was born October 8, 1940 in Plainfield, New Jersey the daughter of Ernest and Mildred (Thompson) Peters. She graduated from Hillcrest High School in Dallas, TX with the class of 1959. She then attended Texas Women’s University, earning a B.A. degree in Recreation and a Minor in Sociology, graduating in 1962.
Carole began working as a Teacher at Head Start in Hoonah, Alaska in 1962. In 1969, she worked for the Woodbridge State School in Woodbridge, NJ retiring in 1996. While at Woodbridge, Carole was honored by the ARC as employee of the year. She was co-founder of Great Pretenders, a community theater group of people with disabilities. Carole wrote, acted in and costumed 17 plays for the Pretenders. Along with several friends, Carole then opened a day training school, from which she eventually retired.
In 1996, Carole moved to Lawrence, Kansas. She began designing and making the stuffed animals she called Kaw River Critter. She also enjoyed doing watercolor art. While living in New Jersey, she received the Auvy Award for her costume designing with the Theatre Group of New Jersey.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Mildred Peters; two foster sons, John Reynolds and Adam Kessler; aunt, Isabelle Thompson; and a sister-in-law, Esther Peters.
She is survived by a sister, Suzanne Ashley of Lawrence, KS; two brothers, Kenn Peters of Linwood, KS, and Ernest Peters and his wife, Joan, of Denver, CO; two nephews, Mark Ashley of Lawrence, KS, and Lawrence Peters of Chicago, IL; her dog, Roy; and some cousins.
