David L. Harness

David L. Harness, 67, of Ottawa, Kansas passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 28, 2022, at the University of Kansas Hospital with his wife and daughter by his side.

He was born August 19, 1954 in Warrensburg, Missouri the son of Kenneth Carl Harness and Eva L. (Milks) Harness. David grew up in Warrensburg, MO, graduating from Warrensburg High School in 1973. He earned an associate degree in electronics from Central Missouri State University and worked as an electronics technician for over 40 years, retiring in 2020.

On August 12, 1978, David was united in marriage to Cynthia E. Cooper in Warrensburg, MO. They shared over 43 years of loving marriage and welcomed a daughter, Jennifer.

David engaged his passion for aviation by building and flying remote controlled model airplanes as a member of the Jayhawk Model Masters. He instilled a love of science in his daughter and also encouraged her interest in music by volunteering as the stage manager for the Ottawa Suzuki Strings. He was also proud of his wife and supported her throughout her career as a teacher.

Much to the amusement of his family, he was a master of the “Dad Joke.” He loved making people laugh, from family and friends to complete strangers. After his retirement, he could be found “enjoying life behind bars” (cruising around town on his Harley-Davidson), playing chess on Tuesdays and Thursdays, cheering for his favorite sports teams, or spending time with his wife outdoors exploring nature and birdwatching.

David is survived by his wife, Cindy Harness, Ottawa; daughter, Jennifer Yoest and husband Joe, Cleveland, OH; sister, Patricia Downing, Warrensburg, MO; brother-in-law, Jim Bumgarner, Warrensburg, MO; sister-in-law, Blanche Harness, Fayette, MO; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Elizabeth Bumgarner, and brother, Don Harness.

Family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Thursday, June 2, 2022, at Lamb-Roberts-Price Funeral Home, 325 S. Hickory St., Ottawa, KS. A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 3, 2022 at Lamb-Roberts-Price Funeral Home, Ottawa. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery, Ottawa.
