Don Magerl, Sr. Obituary

Donald Lee Magerl, Sr, 80, of Pomona, KS died Monday, August 12, 2024 in his home.

He was born September 23, 1943 in Kansas City, Missouri the son of Richard and Dorothy (Miller) Magerl.  He attended Wentworth Military Academy.

On January 2, 1965, Donald was united in marriage to Judith Spillman at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City, OK.

Don worked as a car mechanic at Donovan’s until joining the military.  He served as an Airman First Class during the Vietnam War as a flight engineer and flight mechanic.  Don earned the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with 1 Bronze Star, the Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation, and the Air Medal for Individual Action.  He then went on to work as a diesel mechanic for the Santa Fe Railroad for 31 years, retiring in 2004. 

Don volunteered as a firefighter for Lexington Township in rural Johnson County for 20 years.  He was also a member of the V. F.W. in Ottawa, KS. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Dorothy Magerl, his wife, Judith Magerl, and a sister, Cindy Magerl.

He is survived by a daughter, Dana Gechter and her husband, Michael, of Ottawa, KS; a son, Donald Magerl, Jr, and his wife, Bonnie, of Pomona, KS; a brother, Bob Magerl of Labelle, FL; three grandchildren, Rebecka, Blake, and Lucas; and two great-grandchildren, Bridger and Lawson.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m., Monday August 19, 2024 at Woodlawn Cemetery, Pomona, KS.  Memorial contributions may be made to Hope House and sent c/o Lamb-Roberts-Price Funeral Home, P.O. Box 14, Ottawa, KS 66067. Condolences may be sent to the family through www.lamb-roberts.com.
