Dorthea Jackson Obituary

Dorthea Irene Jackson, 89, of Baldwin City, Kansas passed away July 21, 2018 in Baldwin City, KS. She was born April 12, 1929 Lawrence, KS the daughter of Millard Jackson and Matilda (Henon) Jackson. Dorthea grew up in the Baldwin City, KS area, graduating from Baldwin High School with the class of 1947. She then graduated from Baker University in 1950 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. While at Baker University she was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. After graduation she taught in a one room school house, grades 1 through 8. She then taught math one year at Winchester Kansas High School. She then began her career working in geophysics at Shell Oil Company in Houston, TX. While working for Shell she obtained her Masters of Science in Engineering Degree from the University of Houston. At the time of her retirement in 1988, Dorthea was a project leader in computer control engineering for Shell. Surviving family include her brother, John V. Jackson and his wife, Anne, of Baldwin City, KS; nephews, Gary Stecher and his wife, Linda, of Atchison, KS, Mark Stecher and his wife, Mary, of Atchison, KS, John Brian Jackson and his wife, Lisa, of Olathe, KS, Steve Jackson of Baldwin City, KS, Eric Jackson and his wife, Heidi, of Merriam, KS; eight great nephews; and seven great-great nephews. Dorthea is preceded in death by her parents and older sister Dolores Stecher. While living in Houston, Dorthea was a member of Episcopal Christ Church Cathedral. Dorthea enjoyed doing activities with her family, extended family and friends, especially the "Baldwin Biddies". She was a member of the Baldwin City Library, having served as Treasurer for several years, a member of the Santa Fe Trail Historical Society, serving as secretary for several years, and a member of the Baldwin City Bird Club. She was very interested in the community, keeping track of the city commission activities was one of her favorite pastimes. She will be deeply missed and remain in the hearts and thoughts of her family and friends forever. Memorial services will be held 7:00 p.m., Wednesday July 25, 2018 at Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home, Baldwin City. Family will greet friends for a visitation prior to the service from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday. Private inurnment will be held later at Prairie City Cemetery, Baldwin City, KS.
