Douglas Pope Obituary

Douglas E. Pope, 81, of Ottawa, Kansas died Thursday, June 25, 2020 at Advent Health Ottawa.

Douglas was born May 25, 1939 in Waverly, KS, the son of Clarence Pope and Pansy (Stine) Pope.  He grew up in Waverly graduating from Waverly High School with the class of 1957.  He then attended Emporia State University for a year. He moved to Ottawa in 1962.

He served his country in the United States Army and Army National Guard from October of 1960 to October of 1966, attaining the rank of E-5. 

Douglas was a carpenter.  He worked in Topeka for 25 years and then in 1993 started Pope and Son Construction.

On December 29, 1962, Douglas was united in marriage to Carolyn K. Atchison at the Ottawa First United Methodist Church. 

Douglas was a member of the First Baptist Church of Waverly.  He was also a Deacon of the church.  He loved his job and never had a problem working long hard hours of his profession.  He was always busy doing something.  He enjoyed mowing several yards.  He always enjoyed reading a good book and spent many hours cheering on his K.U. Basketball team.  He loved to visit with friends and especially with his beloved family.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Pope, Ottawa; daughter, Lindee Calderwood and her husband, Richard, Overbrook, KS; three sons, Jeffery Pope and his wife, Tracie, Ottawa, Trenton Pope and his wife, Deane, Littleton, CO, Chad Pope, Ottawa; brother, Richard Pope and his wife, Cheryl, Waverly, KS; four grandchildren, Vernon Lee Pope, Arden, NC, Payton Pope, Ottawa, Whitney Fritzel, Eudora, KS, Austin Calderwood, Overbrook, KS; and three great grandchildren.

Mr. Pope will be cremated and the family will be holding private family services. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to First Baptist Church Waverly sent c/o Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home, P.O. Box 14, Ottawa, KS 66067.
