James L. Gilliland

James L. Gilliland, 89, of Lawrence, KS passed away December 23, 2024 at Brandon Woods in Lawrence, KS.  He was born March 16, 1935 in rural Douglas County, KS the son of Lori Lee Gilliland and Mabel Ann (Newland) Gilliland.  His parents preceded him in death in 1936 and 1982. 

He attended schools at Baldwin City, KS graduating from High School in 1952.  He attended the University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS. He earned a degree from the School of Business in 1959. 

He married Florence Louise Puckett of Lawrence, KS on September 5, 1954 at the Danforth Chapel on the University of Kansas Campus.  

They moved to the Kansas City area where he pursued a career as a C.P.A. for six years.  He joined United Telecommunications, Inc. in 1965, serving the parent company in Kansas City and subsidiaries in Ohio, Pennsylvania and New Jersey for over twenty-two years until his retirement in 1988.  After moving to the Lawrence area in 1989, he pursued various work including an independent tax service in Lawrence.  He ended his working career in 2001 while as a consultant for the Kansas Bureau of Waste Management in Topeka, KS. 

Mr. Gilliland is survived by wife, Florence; daughter Pamela Ann Bone of Baldwin City, KS; son James Wesley and wife Jeanette of St. Louis, MO; daughter Louisa Deindre Neria and husband Sidney of Kansas City, MO; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. 

Cremation is planned.  The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, December 31, 2024 at the Lamb-Roberts-Price Funeral Home, 712 9th Street, Baldwin City, KS.  Inurnment will be held at a later date at Oakwood Cemetery, Baldwin City, KS.  Memorial Contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and sent in c/o the Lamb-Roberts-Price Funeral Home, P.O.
