Jane Harris Obituary

Jane Harris, age 99, passed away peacefully with family surrounding her on Sunday, January 10, 2021. She was born in Argentine, KS to Reno Arthur and Mary Maude (Cox) Maybell on January 29, 1921.   She graduated from Argentine High School in 1939. She married Charles “Ken” Harris on February 10, 1944 in Glendale, CA.  They enjoyed nearly 70 years of marriage prior to his passing January 2, 2014.

After graduation she was accepted as a trainee for United Airlines and moved to Glendale, CA to pursue her career as a licensed FAA teletype and radio operator.   Jane met Ken who was working for Lockheed as a Supervisor as their apartments were in the same area.   They moved back to Ken’s hometown of Ottawa in 1946 where Ken became a Partner with his father in the Central Check Company.    Jane worked in administrative roles throughout the years including a court reporter for 4 years before finding her long term and favorite position as Medical Transcriptionist at Ransom Memorial Hospital.   She was employed at Ransom Memorial Hospital for over 17 years prior to her retirement in 1986.    She was very proud to be named as “Employee of the Year” in 1981.

She loved the hollies that they planted surrounding their house, watching sports (KU Basketball, Chiefs, Royals-especially Salvy), drives through the countryside that she took with Ken and a nice glass of “Vino” with her friends.  She was a member of Garfield Garden Club, PEO and the Methodist Church.

Jane had a smile that would light up the room and was always grateful to those that cared for her.  A special thanks to Jodi, the current and previous staff of Vintage Park, Advent Health Ottawa nursing staff, Dr. Ojeleye and Jamie Mehl.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents and her two brothers Jud and Leon Maybell.   She will be dearly missed by her children and grandchildren;  children, Scott Harris,  Sam (Sheri) Harris, Janet (Don) Koch; 5 grandchildren,  Holly (Patrick) Harris-Binder, Clint (Rachel) Harris, Kelly (Josh) Nelson,  Cori (Nathan) Oglesby, Kimbra (Matt) Sapp; 7 great-grandchildren, Caleb Oglesby, Ava Oglesby, Jessica Harris, Warren Harris, Amelia Harris, Hudson Sapp and Sloane Sapp.
