John Charles Modde II, 64, of Carbondale, Kansas died Friday, May 22, 2026 in Carbondale, Kansas.
He was born February 13, 1962 in Fort Riley, Kansas the son of John Charles Modde I and Theresa Furst. With his father being in the military, John moved a lot throughout his childhood before graduating from Custer High School in Custer, South Dakota with the class of 1980. He went on to complete some college.
On April 9, 1993, John was united in marriage to Hazel “Becca” Burnworth in Newton, Kansas. They then moved to Carbondale where they shared 33 years of loving marriage with each other.
John began serving his country in the United States Army in 1980. He retired after 25 years as a Sergeant First Class. John was awarded the Army Commendation Medal (2nd Award), Army Achievement Medal (3rd Award), Army Superior Unit Award, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal (4th Award), National Defense Service Medal (2nd Award), Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer’s Professional Development Ribbon with Numeral 3, Army Service Ribbon, Army Lapel Button, Overseas Service Ribbon (2nd Award), Expert Marksmanship Qualification Badge with Rifle Bar, Air Assault Badge, Driver and Mechanic Badge with Driver-W Bar, Driver and Mechanic Badge with Mechanic Bar, and the Silver German Army Marksmanship Badge. He was a very proud American and loved the military.
John was a very faithful Christian. He was a big fan of the Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Longhorns. He loved anything outdoors, including riding his Harley and grilling for his friends, especially his best friends Kelly Stubbs, Dustin Wegner, and T Cruz. Most of all, John was a loving and devoted husband, father, and Papa to his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Theresa Furst; a sister, Cathy Knox; and a brother, Jeffrey Modde.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel “Becca” Modde of the home; a daughter, Tosha Smith and her husband, Brad, of Carbondale, KS; four sons, John Charles Modde III and Kasey Modde of Copperas Cove, TX, Ezra Cody Godshall and his wife, Sydney, of Carbondale, KS, Cory Godshall of Derby, KS, and Blaze Modde of Carbondale, KS; his father, John Charles Modde I of Billings, MT; a sister, Patty Nelson and her husband, Mark, of Rapid City, SD; seven grandchildren, Gavyn, Lylah, and Rigyn Smith, Jackson, Piper, and Johnny Modde IV, Hailey Grace, and one on the way; and many nieces, nephews, and close friends.
Memorial Services will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 29, 2026 at Carbondale Cemetery, Carbondale, KS.
