John William Netherland of Ottawa, KS passed away Tuesday, November 15, 2022 at the age of 91 years. John was born on July 21, 1931 in St. Joseph, MO, the son of Gladys Seaman and John Lanning Netherland.
John graduated from Central High School in St. Joseph, MO with the class of 1949. In 1953, he graduated with a B.S. in Agriculture from the University of Missouri. After college, he moved to Ottawa, KS where he was the owner and operator of Silkville Ranch in Williamsburg, KS, a large ranch devoted chiefly to raising and breeding cattle. John continued ranching for over 60 years. He was well-respected among the cattle industry where he was President of the Kansas City Hereford Club, as well as a member of the Kansas Livestock Association, American Hereford Association and Franklin County Livestock Association.
In 1958, John was united in marriage to Barbara Shader in Ottawa, KS. They shared 64 years of marriage and were parents to three daughters.
John is survived by his wife Barbara and daughters; Martha Netherland of Santa Fe, NM, Catherine Reed (Tony) of Overland Park, KS, and Janet Karpan (David) of Tampa, FL.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Jean Netherland Kincaid.
A devoted husband, adored father and faithful friend, John’s biggest joys were spending time with his family, having his girls go to the ranch with him, and taking family vacations.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, November 22, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Grace Episcopal Church, 315 W. 5th St., Ottawa, KS 66067.
