John “Jack” Joseph Harris, 94, of Baldwin City, KS passed away Sunday, January 23, 2022 at Vintage Park in Baldwin City, KS.
He was born September 14, 1927 in Clinton, MO the son of Franz Josef Harris and Mary Lee (Limebeck) Harris. John grew up in Clinton graduating from Clinton High School with the class of 1944 He lived in the Kansas City Metro area most of his life living primarily in Raytown, Mo until retiring to Baldwin City, KS in 2011.
John served his country in the United States Navy from 1951 to 1953 and then in the United States Navy Reserves until 1963. During his service he earned the rank of Seaman first class and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, China Service Medal, and Korean Service Medal with 2 stars.
On July 2, 1955 John was united in marriage to Evelyn Jane Climer in Kansas City, MO. They shared fifty-seven years of marriage until the death of Evelyn in 2013.
For over forty years John was a Troubleshooting Manager for Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company in the Kansas City area. During his time he managed numerous stores in the Kansas City area until his retirement in 1993.
John was a member of the Besonia Baptist Church, Raytown, MO. He was also a member of the V.F.W., Raytown, MO, the American Legion of Baldwin City, and the Southwestern Bell Communicator’s Pioneer Auxiliary.
He loved to woodwork over his years. Recently he had taken an affinity to reading. He loved to spend the summer in his garden growing various vegetables and was well known for always having a garage sale at his house. He had the ability to fix almost anything and was always helpful with friends and family if they needed him to help in that manner. He spent most of his later years caring for his beloved wife, Evelyn and considered it an honor to have the ability to do so. He was a big Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Royal Fan and spent many afternoons watching both. His favorite pastime was just spending precious moments with his family especially his children and grandchildren. He loved them all dearly.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Harris; his parents; Franz and Mary Lee Harris; a son Anthony Harris; two grandsons, John Harris, Clinton Harris; and a sister, Mary Jo Harris.
John is survived by two sons, Nick Harris and his wife, Martha, Baldwin City, KS, Mike Harris, Nashville, TN; daughter, Jackie Daigh, Baldwin City, KS; daughter in law, Diane Harris, Phoenix, AZ; seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday January 29, 2022 at Lamb-Roberts-Price Funeral Home, Baldwin City, KS. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery, Baldwin City, KS. The family will greet friends for a visitation prior to the service at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
