Linda Hummel Obituary

Linda Y. Hummel, Overbrook, KS died on January 3, 2023 at her home. She was 67 and died from A.L.S.

She was born May 28, 1955 in Phillipsburg, KS the daughter of Bill Taylor and Delores (Wheeler) Taylor.  Linda graduated from Jewell High School with the class of 1973. 

In her early years she was in local country bands around Jewell.  She and her siblings formed “The Ranchhands.”  She also sang in the gospel choir “The Challengers.”  She later sang in the Band “Sweet Water.” Linda was also involved with horses her entire life and enjoyed the rodeo.

She attended Colby Community College and later the University of South Dakota, receiving her Bachelor of Science in Biology.  She also attended Emporia State University for her Master’s degree and obtained her teaching certificate.

Linda worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service Meat Poultry and Egg Inspection Department in Dodge City, KS for seventeen years.  She finished her working career as a college instructor at Washburn Technical College in Topeka, KS.

Her hobbies included crocheting, reading, music, but most loved by Linda was riding and working with her horses.  She was a member of the Lyndon Saddle Club and worked with youth as a 4-H leader while in Dodge City. 

On May 24, 1986 Linda was united in marriage to Richard Hummel.  Richard survives of the home.

She is also survived by a daughter, Jyma (Sylvester Miller)Culbertson; son Hayes Culbertson; step-children, Shane (Carla) Hummel, Mindi Hummel; three granddaughters; one grandson; six step grandchildren; six step great grandchildren; three siblings, Von (Cindy) Taylor, Steve (Carol) Taylor, Cheryl (Fred) Anderson; mother-in-law, Wilma Hummel; sister-in-law, Veronica (Bill) Porter; brother-in-law, Alan Hummel; and many nieces and nephews on both sides.  She also leaves behind her best friend Janda VanLoren; her dogs, cats, and her beloved horse, Acie.

Linda is preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Delores Taylor; all grandparents; father-in-law, Arnold Hummel; sister-in-law Pam Hummel; nephew, Ben Hummel; and numerous family members on both sides.

She will be missed by many; however, Heaven gained a talented singer.

Her wish was to be cremated.  A Celebration of Life will be held at the Overbrook United Methodist Church, 11:00 a.m., January 14, 2023. Cremains will be interred at Westfield Township Cemetery, Westfield, IA, at a later date.
