CW5 retired Lloyd Edwin Arnold, 89, of Wakarusa, Kansas died Tuesday, April 14, 2026 at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas.
He was born September 21, 1936 in Topeka, Kansas the son of Ralph and Clarice (Buchanan) Arnold. He graduated from Washburn Rural High School with the class of 1954. Throughout his life, Lloyd attended many military and civilian school programs, earning a large number of certificates from these programs.
On June 24, 1956, Lloyd was united in marriage to Marilynn “Mary Kay” Stuver at Topeka Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas. This June, they would’ve celebrated seventy years of loving marriage with one another.
Lloyd began his lifelong career in the Kansas Army National Guard before graduating high school. He worked as a mechanic in the National Guard for 37 years before retiring from his full time position at the age of 55. He had the gift of being able to fix anything. Shortly after, he achieved the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 5 (CW5) in Kansas and became a weekend member. He was then promoted to State Maintenance Officer in Kansas and 4 to 6 times each year travelled to North Little Rock, Arkansas to train other maintenance officers at the National Guard Professional Education Center. Lloyd was a member of the Board of Directors of the National Guard Association of Kansas for eight years, served as Chairman of the Membership and Nominations Committees each for two years, and served as Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Kansas National Guard Hall of Fame. A highly decorated veteran, Lloyd earned many decorations and badges, including the Meritorious Service Medal, two Army Commendation Medals, three Army Achievement Medals, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Non-Commission Officers Development Program Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Reserve Component Overseas Training, Kansas National Guard Distinguished Service Ribbon, Kansas National Guard Meritorious Service Ribbon, Kansas Emergency Duty Service Ribbon, Kansas National Guard Service Medal, Expert Marksmanship Badge, and Driver/Wheel Mechanic Badge. He was deeply devoted to his country and serving in the National Guard, a trait that he passed down to all three of his sons and grandson, Kenneth L. Arnold, who also served.
After retiring from full time service with the National Guard, Lloyd began working full time at FEMA, where he stayed for 23 years. Lloyd couldn’t be considered an idle man, so after retiring from FEMA, he continued serving the National Guard as a volunteer at the Museum of the Kansas National Guard once a month.
Aside from the military, Lloyd devoted his time to taking care of his beloved wife, Mary Kay. They travelled, not because Lloyd was a big fan, but because Mary Kay wanted to, and they were often joined by their dear friends, Shirley and Wayne Daniel. He was a devoted family man, and loved his wife, sons, and grandchildren with all his heart. This legacy of love will persevere for years to come, thanks to the tight knit bond he helped to cultivate. Lloyd and Mary Kay almost always had a pet around, most recently their kitty who chose Lloyd as her “person”, often snuggling up on his lap to watch tv in the evenings. Lloyd also loved gardening.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Clarice Arnold; two brothers, Lyman L. “Jim” Arnold and his wife, Harriet, and Dallace L. Arnold and his wife, Alice; and a sister, Leila Nelson and her husband. Robert.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Kay Arnold of the home; three sons, Larry Arnold and his wife, Sydney, of Wakarusa, KS, Tim Arnold and his wife, Collene, of Carbondale, KS, and Jeff Arnold and his wife, Carrie, of Carbondale, KS; six grandchildren, Kellie Arnold, Kenneth L. Arnold, Rebecca Collins and her husband, Chris, Cole Arnold, Chase Arnold and his fiancée, Ashley, and Kenneth M. Arnold; four great-grandchildren, Zachary, Zaden, Adaline, and Liam; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, April 24, 2026 at Fellowship Bible Church, Topeka, KS. Casual attire is encouraged.
