Maria Ellen Cromwell, 92, of Ottawa, KS passed away Saturday, September 23, 2023 at the Kansas City Hospice House in Kansas City, MO. She was born June 14, 1931 in Nuremberg, Germany the daughter of Karl Ehrentreich and Frieda (Weiss) Ehrentreich. She grew up and attended schools in Germany.
She was united in marriage to Willard Monroe Cromwell Jr. on January 27, 1955 in Nuremberg, Germany. They shared over forty-one years of marriage before the death of her husband on June 1, 1996.
Maria became a United States Citizen on December 10, 1959.
Maria worked as a seamstress for Bruce’s H.D. Lee Company in Ottawa, KS and later, worked as a waitress at the North American Hotel in Ottawa, KS. She was a co-owner/ operator with her husband Willard, of Andy’s Service Gas Station located at 1115 W. 7th Street, Ottawa, KS for over thirty-five years.
She was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church in Ottawa, KS; and a member of the Ottawa Eagles Auxiliary for over thirty years. Maria enjoyed playing cards and spending time with family and friends; playing the slots at Casino’s; camping at Pomona Lake; and caring for her animals.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Willard.
Survivors include her daughter, Lorrain Cromwell of Ottawa, KS; two brothers, Rudolf Ehrentreich and his wife, Edith of Karlsfeld, Germany and Thomas Weiss of Germany; a nephew, Manfred Ehrentreich and his wife, Brigitte of Grossbaghofen, Germany; four brothers-in-law, Donald Cromwell of TX, Richard Cromwell of GA, Jerry Cromwell of FL and Roger Cromwell of FL; two grandchildren, Adriana Tyler Anderson and Dylan Monroe Anderson; two great-grandchildren, Dallas Parker Anderson and Bennett Walker Anderson; and special friends, Joe Rogers, Kenny Vandaventer and Brooke Meiers.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 11, 2023 at the Faith Lutheran Church, 1320 W. 15th Street, Ottawa, KS 66067. Inurnment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Williamsburg, KS.
