Neal Baker Obituary

Neal Wayne Baker, Pomona, KS passed away at Kansas University Medical Center, August 30, 2021.  He was 68.

He was born November 22, 1952, in Ottawa, Kansas; the son of John and Laura Jean Baker. He graduated from Pomona High School with the class of 1970. Following high school, he attended Kansas State Teachers College for several years before enlisting in the Army. He served in the U.S. Army from 1973 to 1976, spending nearly two years stationed in Sinop, Turkey.

Upon completion of service, Neal returned to Emporia State University and graduated in 1977 with a degree in business management and a minor in accounting. An office job was not for Neal and he began working construction with Dennis Weiss. He also worked with his father at Baker & Son Logging, Pomona. He eventually began working as a substitute rural mail carrier in Ottawa, Kansas until becoming a fulltime rural mail carrier. Before and after retirement, Neal worked on rebuilding and remodeling homes and barns, and refinishing antiques. Once he retired from the post office, he focused on barns and metal roofs. Over the years, he worked with a number of great people, most recently, Jay Wiscombe.

He was a member of the Pomona Methodist Church, and served 6 years on the West Franklin District School Board.

Neal married Nancy J. Parks on August 13, 1977 at Leavenworth, Kansas.  They recently celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary. She survives of the home.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, John Baker, Gypsum, Kansas; Adrian and wife, Danielle, Manhattan, Kansas; two sisters, Carol Webb and husband, Marvin, Bettendorf, IA; Marilyn Resner and husband, Wally,  Ottawa, KS; sister-in-law, Sandi Ackerman, Leavenworth, KS; brother-in-law Tim Parks and wife Eileen, Leavenworth; nieces, Kathryn Naill, Ami Jenkins, Beth Hazels, Jana Rideout, Jennie Mellor, Sara Rickert , Melanie Bethea, and nephews Brian Webb and Kevin McCurdy.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; a niece, Karen Webb; stepfather, Max Floyd and brother-in-law, Grant Ackerman.

Family will meet with friends and family at Lamb-Roberts-Price Funeral Home, 325 S. Hickory, Ottawa, KS 66067 on Saturday, September 4, 2021 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. with funeral services beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Inurnment will be at Greenwood Cemetery, Pomona.

The family suggests memorial contributions to World Wildlife Federation for Save the Elephants or Prairie Paws, Ottawa, Kansas in care of Lamb-Roberts-Price Funeral Home, P.O. Box 14, Ottawa, Kansas 66067.
