Norma Lee Sconce, 91, of Baldwin City, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, November 29, 2023 at her home in Baldwin City, KS.  She was born December 29, 1931 in Baldwin City, KS, the daughter of Lori Lee Gilliland and Mabel (Newland) Gilliland.  Norma grew up in Baldwin City graduating from Baldwin High School with the class of 1947.  She then attended Baker University.  Norma also attended New Mexico State University, Las Cruces, NM.

Norma lived in Baldwin City, KS and Topeka, KS before moving to Deming, NM for twenty three years then moving back to Baldwin City, KS in 1985.  For over eleven years Norma worked at the Baker University cafeteria.  She loved her job and every year she would make sure to learn everyone’s name and enjoyed meeting all the new students on campus.

She was a member of Ives Chapel Methodist Church, Baldwin City, KS.  In her spare time she would enjoy reading a good book.  She loved to paint in her younger years and was quite artistic.  She won local awards for her paintings and had her work displayed in the New Mexico Capital building and various banks and homes in New Mexico.  She would play the piano when she had the time but her great talent was in her “green thumb”.  Norma was an incredible gardener and loved caring for flowers and plants.  She had an uncanny ability to maintain beautiful plants and flowers throughout her house. She was a very loving mother, grandmother, aunt and selfless friend to all. She always tried to enrich the lives of those around her. For many years she served as the Newland family historian and worked to keep ties strong with the Newland family reunion each year.

In 1958 Norma was united in marriage to Robert Sconce in Baldwin City, KS.  They later divorced.

She is survived by two sons, Scott Sconce, Baldwin City, KS, Robert Sconce, Burleson, TX; a daughter, Lori Fleming, Burleson, TX; granddaughter, Hannah Fleming, Burleson, TX; brother, James Gilliland and his wife, Florence, Lawrence, KS; two nieces, Pam Bone, Baldwin City, KS, Louisa Neria, Kansas City, MO; nephew, Wes Gilliland, St. Louis, MO; two great nieces, Beth Maddox, Becky Holbert, and five great nephews, Noah Gilliland, Jack Gilliland, Daniel Bone, Peter Bone, and Bobby Bone.
