Phillip Reed Obituary

Phillip Edward Reed, 71, of Baldwin City, KS died Saturday November 12, 2022 at his home in Baldwin City.

He was born November 12, 1951 in Lawrence, KS the son of Edward Reed and Roberta (Morris) Reed.  Phillip was raised in Lawrence graduating from Lawrence High School with the class of 1969.  Following high school Phillip lived a few years in Houston, TX and then St. Louis, Mo before returning to Kansas and settling in Baldwin City in the late 1970’s.

Phillip had a strong work ethic his entire life.  As a young man he worked a paper route and then in high school worked for a local funeral home.  After high school Phillip worked in several different professions, but most of his adult life was dedicated to being an over the road truck driver.  He enjoyed the long hauls and the views from his cab.  This profession was cut short when he was diagnosed with metastatic renal cell carcinoma. Phillip decided to fight and after several surgeries was able to live the rest of his life cancer free. He was always thankful for the care received during those years and his first oncologist who always referred to Phillip as a “miracle”.

He enjoyed many hobbies over his life including boating and four-wheeling.  He also enjoyed electronics and stereo equipment especially his H.A.M. Radio.  He enjoyed getting on the radio with his H.A.M. radio club.  As home computers became more popular, Phillip developed a love for them and taught himself how to work on them and repair them, a skill that was a blessing not only to himself but to his many family and many friends in the community.

Phillip made friends everywhere he went and never met a stranger. He enjoyed sharing stories and telling jokes and his quick-witted nature made him a favorite of many. In his later years, you could generally find him making his rounds around town, delivering treats to local businesses and friends to put a smile on somebody’s face. He also always traveled with multiple bags of dog treats to share with all the dogs he met along the way.

He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Reed; mother, Roberta Dickey; and his step-father Harold Dickey.
Phillip is survived by a daughter, Danielle Weaver and her husband, Cody, Muldrow, OK; five sisters, Kathy McCrary and her husband David, Baldwin City, KS, Susan Sweat and her husband, Greg, Leawood, KS, Melanie Reed, Lee’s Summit, MO, Melissa Johnson and her husband, Ray, Lansing, KS, Kristin Boyd, Las Vegas, NV; a brother, Kyle Reed, Lansing, KS; ex-wife and friend, Ericka Hale, Basehor, KS; and three grandsons, Langdon Giddens, Fort Scott, KS, Briston Weaver and Carston Weaver of Muldrow, OK; as well as multiple nieces and nephews.
