Stephen Proffitt Obituary

Stephen B. Proffitt, 66 of Lane, Kansas passed away April 7, 2016 at Kansas University Medical Center, Kansas City, Kansas. He was born October 28, 1949 in Denver, Colorado, the son of James Henry Proffitt and Sylvia Blanche Hambrick. Stephen was raised in Denver and graduated from Lincoln High School, Denver, with the class of 1968. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served his country from June of 1968 until May of 1974, during the Vietnam War, attaining the rank of Staff Sargent and a earning the National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Air Force Good Conduct Medal. He worked for thirty years for Hobart Corporation in the food equipment division beginning in the parts department and eventually retiring as the Regional Service Advisor of the Kansas City Office. After retirement Stephen worked part-time at Miami Lumber and Lang Chevrolet in Paola. He was a member of the Air Force Sargent Association and was an active member and co-chair of the Over-the-Road Gang of Ottawa. Stephen was an avid Broncos fan. He loved raising, training and riding appaloosa horses. He enjoyed many weekends competing in local and regional car shows in the area with his beloved 1965 Oldsmobile 442. He also enjoyed swimming and working on improvements around the house. On December 20, 1987, Stephen was united in marriage to Donna Womack in Denver, Colorado. Stephen is survived by his wife, Donna Proffitt, of Lane, KS; a son, David Proffitt, of Orchard, CO; four sisters, Brenda Haulman, of Hutchinson, KS, Diana Abney, Judy Emerson, Susan Proffitt, all of Denver, CO; grandson, Joshua Proffitt, of Orchard, CO; granddaughter, Rachael Proffitt, of Greeley, CO; great granddaughter, Ryleigh Proffitt of Orchard, CO; five nephews; and three nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Alice Diefendorf. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 10, 2016 at the Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home, Ottawa. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, April 14, 2016 at Olinger Crown Hill Mortuary,7777 West 29th Ave Wheat Ridge, CO, with a family visitation prior from 10:00 a.m. to the service hour. Interment will follow at 1:00 p.m. at Fort Logan National Cemetery, Denver.
